TOP 5 Mysterious places in the world

Hello my dear readers!

After a long break, I decided to create the TOP 5 section. In this section “TOP 5 Mysterious places in the world” I will show you the most mysterious places of the world. Since we are still having difficulty traveling due to the global pandemic, let’s take a virtual tour!

TOP 5 Mysterious places in the world

So let`s get started with:

Number 1

Easter Island

Easter Island is located in the southernmost part of the Pacific Ocean and about 3400 km west of Chile. The island itself is formed by three volcanoes – Terevaka, Poike and Rano Kau. The island was discovered by the Dutch traveler Jakob Rogeven on the eve of Easter, 1722.

There are the mysterious statues called moai – or stone statues made of volcanic ash. The interesting thing about them is that they depict human figures of different heights and are about 900 in number. In the crater of the largest volcano on the island of Rano Kau is the ceremonial village with stone houses without windows and doors. There are many beliefs that if you stand in one of them for a few minutes, your eyes begin to see in the dark, and as you climb back up, you see buried moai.

Another legend says that the stone from which they are made is called the “Navel of the World” and that it is the very center of the Earth and the cosmos.

Whatever legends exist, no matter how many scientists try to decipher the place, it will always remain exciting and mystical for us. The answer that everyone is asking themselves and may continue to ask themselves who really built these stone statues right here and why?

Number 2

Lalibela, Ethiopia

Lalibela, Ethiopia

Lalibela is located in northern Ethiopia and is famous for its many rock-hewn churches and is considered a sacred place.

One of the legends says that in the 12th century the Etopian king Lalibela received a vision that this place should be the new Jerusalem. Therefore, he ordered the construction of 11 unique churches carved into the rocks.

Another legend says that the churches themselves were built by the Etopian king Lalibel with the help of 25 angels. From the very birth of the king it was said that he had supernatural powers, so the queen decided that he should inherit the throne after her. After growing up and taking over the rule of Ethiopia, he turned the city of Roja into Lalibela.

The interest in the churches built in the rocks and in the ground does not stop. As beautiful and unusual as their construction is, so mystical is the place. Many scholars have tried to unravel the mystery of Lalibela, but no one has ever understood why these churches were built this way – from the roof down. Digging from the top of the rock down, the workers destroyed valuable historical information about the architecture and the very design of the project.

In the center of the complex is the largest church called “Temple of the Savior” with a height of 11 meters and a length of 30 meters. Only its roof can be seen from above, and the church itself is dug into the ground.

No matter how many of the legends are true, whether they are fairy tales or wonderful fabrications, this corner of the earth brings incredible power and mystique that is worth a visit!

Number 3

The Catacombs of Paris

Now you`re wondering – why should I go to see the catacombs? Aren’t they pretty sinister? It is interesting that the catacombs of Paris are not only historical landmarks but also a great attraction for many tourists! Yes, they are really full of fear and mysterious stories, but why not get a little more adrenaline?

The first part of the Paris catacombs was called the “Innocent Cemetery”. It was here that the victims of the bubonic plague were buried and from the famous night of St. Bartholomew. According to sources, more than 2 million people were buried there. After an order was issued in the 17th century not to bury people in Paris, the whole concept of catacombs was overturned. The remains were stacked on top of each other to form a corridor.

Composed of long tunnels (about 200-300 km), the catacombs are called the largest cemetery in the world, as well as the “Empire of the Dead”. In many places there are signs with the names of the remains, under which street it is located.

Of course, this is not a destination for everyone. However, in the tunnels it is quite narrow, it goes down about 20 meters underground and speaking of mysteries ….. Well, try if you can walk around so many remains? Still, the catacombs of Paris were visited by an average of 160,000 tourists a year.

Number 4

Pripyat, Ukraine

Pripyat, Ukraine

This place I would say is not a tourist destination I would go to. The city itself was built in 1970 with the goal of settling workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the beginning, the town grew rapidly both demographically and economically. Everything is wonderful for a young and developing city, until 1986. On April 26, 1986. the 4th reactor of the power plant explodes. The population of the city is evacuated, everyone leaves and does not look back. Thousands of homes are abandoned and people never return.

Parts of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia remain unfavorable. According to the data, the infected area should not be inhabited for the next 25 thousand years.

Pripyat Ukraine

One thing is interesting – since 2011. Pripyat has been declared a tourist destination, almost 10,000 tourists a year visit this radioactive place. Some enthusiasts even sleep there overnight. Their stories are about a ghost town, abandoned, full of nostalgia, crumbling and ruined forever.

Even now, 34 years after the explosion, the site is highly radioactive and most places are strictly off-limits. You should not touch anything and you should wear a special suit and shoes.

Walking the streets of this ghost town can envelop you in mystery and nostalgia for what can never be restored.

Number 5

Death Valley, California, USA

Death valley CA, USA

Death Valley is located in California, USA and is the driest and hottest place in the world, hiding a great mystery.

In the past, the valley was inhabited by gold diggers, who then left and only the ghost towns remained. Thousands of tourists flock every year. The temperature can reach a maximum of 56 degrees Celsius!

The most interesting attraction are the floating stones or also called “dancing stones”, which are located at the bottom of a dried lake. The interesting thing here is that these stones move in a straight line, but without human intervention.

The mystery of moving stones cannot be fully explained by scientists, but there are some interesting theories:

  • Some claim that the winds move the stones
  • Others say that the movement of the stones is due to ice and wind
  • The other is because of mixing of the rains makes the sand slippery.

One stone weighs about 300 kg

However, no matter what theories exist, there is no documented video of exactly how these stones move. This interesting and mysterious corner of the world attracts a lot of tourists and it is definitely on my bucket list!
